Camping.
That portion of the River Mountains Loop
Trail completed within Henderson doesn't really lend itself to camping, even
though there are numerous homeless camps around Railroad Pass area. Once you
enter Lake Mead NRA the trail corridor will have many places where you can camp
in either camp grounds with facilities or primitive back country experiences.
Here are two ideas you might try along
the future trail alignment.
Hole #33 old road/trail - This is
not a marked trail on any current map, but we're working on it. Enter the park
on Lake Mead Parkway in Henderson, after Fee station stay on Lake Shore Road
past Las Vegas Bay, 2.5 miles past Las Vegas Bay you should see a scenic view
point on the left. stop here and park.
Cross the new road hiking west and drop
down on the old road, hiking north on old road till you come to an old dirt road
in the drainage. This is what I call the hole #33 road or trail. You can hike
west for 1 to 1 ½ miles before road portion ends. Then you can still hike
another mile or so before coming to a large dry waterfall. You will encounter
several smaller waterfalls which you can get up and over. I hiked this one just
last weekend and saw numerous potential camp spots along the way. Wildflowers
are blooming now. The old paved road here will become part of the River
Mountains Loop Trail later this year when it is re-paved, signed and marked as a
trail.
BMI water line maintenance road -
this old maintenance road will also soon become part of the paved RMLT
connecting Henderson to Lake Mead NRA. Access from both ends, but easiest off
of the west end near Lake Las Vegas secondary entrance at the Park boundary.
There is a paved pull off on the right off of Lake Mead Pkwy. with a gate
blocking any further access. From here you can drop down on the BMI pipeline
right of way and hike east into Lake Mead NRA.
The pipeline right of way/road runs east
2.7 miles until it intersects old Lakeshore Rd. it is generally a downhill
slope/grade. About mid-point you will find a wildlife guzzler with cattails, and
cottonwoods trees. Camping in this area is discouraged. You'll find many dry
washes and areas off the trail alignment where one could camp. RMLT supports
"Leave No Trace" camping principals. This trail segment offers great views of
all the surrounding mountains and Lake Mead.
Other hiking/camping areas at Lake
Mead....from my years of experience all of Lake Mead is a hiking/camping
playground. Below I have provided links to NRA maps and hiking/camping sites.

Trail Planning and Development
-
Segments 1 and 2 – finished - go enjoy the 1.9
mile piece of the trail!
-
Segments 3 and 4 – Boulder City will hire a
consultant for design. Scott Hagan believes the Round VI process with BLM is not
yet in place for Boulder City to receive this funding
-
Segment 5 Boulder City – the Railroad crossing
is still being resolved and right of way issues with the Nevada Dept of
Transportation – will go to bid later this year
-
Segments 6 -12 – finished - go enjoy the about
9 mile piece of the trail!
-
Segments 13-14 – no new news to report
-
Segment 15-16 Working around NDOT and the new
construction of entrance to Lake Las Vegas – will request to place a temporary
trail until NDOT work is completed. Three Kids Mine has a new owner –
and wants the RMLT on their property. The mine has annexation, planning,
density zoning, clean up, etc - underway
-
Segments 17-22 – NPS is reviewing bids, all
bids are over construction estimate, however the Lake Mead National Recreation
Area is moving ahead with the evaluation process of these bids. The winner of
this bid will construct 17 miles of the RML trail in the Lake Mead National
Recreation Area.

The Lake Mead National Recreation Area
released a request for contractors to bid on a part of the River Mountains Loop
Trail. The bid in part said:
"The work of this contract
consists of the general construction of approximately 17.3 miles (91,583 lineal
feet) of 12 foot wide asphaltic concrete or reinforced Portland cement concrete
pedestrian and bike shared use pathway and approximately 3.3 miles (17,600
lineal feet) of 5 foot wide graded and compacted equestrian pathway. It includes
four crossings of an existing water pipeline, a series of drainage culverts and
low water crossings, revegetation by selected replacement of native topsoil and
five connections to existing Trail.”

Please do not Drive on the
Trail.
Just a gentle reminder, motorized
vehicles, of any kind, are not allowed on the River Mountains Loop Trail.
The "paved" part of the trail is within the city-limits of the City of Henderson
Nevada. The Henderson Municipal Code states:
8.99.030 (e) Rules and Regulations Regarding
Use of Parks and Park Facilities.
(Follow link for full ordinance.)
"E. Motor vehicles shall be
parked or operated only in designated areas. No vehicle maintenance is allowed
in the park or parking lot. Motorized skateboards are prohibited.
Only authorized motorized vehicles are
allowed at any time on park trails, pathways, or non-designated areas.
No motor vehicles shall exceed a speed of fifteen mph in any park, unless
otherwise posted."
Please respect the wishes of the
trail users, the City of Henderson and the partners of the River
Mountains Trail Partnership Advisory Council and do not drive on our trail.
Thank you.
