NATIONAL TRAILS DAY - HENDERSON STYLE OCT. 18th, 2008

Trails day 2003National Trails Day Henderson Style - It means we wait until Fall when it is cooler in the desert to hold the National Trails event.   Henderson is rapidly becoming the trail development leader in the State of Nevada.  With over 50-miles built and open; another 9 trail dedication openings planned in 2008 they truly are leaders in trail development.

OCTOBER 18, 2008 we’ll celebrate trails in Henderson through an Awareness Event to be held at the downtown Events Plaza next to Henderson City Hall.

The planning committee has been meeting monthly since February.  Our goal is to help Henderson residents become aware of the many trail and outdoor opportunities they have right in their neighborhood.  There will be a serious of speakers and programs in the outdoor theater; informational and hands-on booths displaying trail locations and features, how to bicycle on trails, walking and hiking programs and displays, how to buy the right walking/hiking shoe/boots. etc.

Bicycle clubs demonstrations;   bike stores & tours helping you with proper bike sizing and maintenance.   Smokey the Bear, and other desert guests will make an appearance.  Kids programs and hands on activities about nature and the environment around them.   Stay tuned for more information and updates…but save the date Oct. 18, 2008 - 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

The Lake Mead National Recreation Area media release (below) discusses an area along the River Mountains Loop Trail that will be closed to the public from May 2008 to December 2012..  The trail is not effected.   However, several "day-use" areas located close to the trail are impacted.  Click on the picture for a bigger picture of the affected area.

Temporary Closure of Saddle Cove Road for SNWA Third Intake Construction Activities

The Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) presently operates two water intakes at Saddle Island on the west shore of Lake Mead, approximately five miles northwest of Hoover Dam and approximately 20 miles east of the center of Las Vegas, within the Lake Mead National Recreation Area.  Severe drought has caused declining water levels in Lake Mead during recent years.

Long-term water supply modeling conducted by the Bureau of Reclamation indicates that the lake level may decline even further until the system recovers from the recent severe drought.

The SNWA plans to construct a third deep-water intake, Intake No. 3, in Lake Mead, and other associated project components, to protect the existing water system capacity against the potential loss of pumping capability of Intake No. 1 should the lake levels continue to fall.

On Thursday, May 15, the National Park Service will temporarily close Saddle Cove Road at Lakeshore Road to public access for the duration of the construction activity, expected to last until December 2012.

Superintendent Bill Dickinson said, "We regret the inconvenience this will cause park visitors who enjoy recreating in the area, but the temporary closure is necessary for contractor access and the safety of park visitors."

SNWA will construct traffic improvements, including a truck deceleration and turning lane, at the intersection of Saddle Cove Road and Lakeshore Road.  Project-related construction traffic will enter and exit the work site through this entrance.  Most of the construction activity will be on land in the Saddle Cove area north of SNWA's existing water treatment facilities near Saddle Island.

Regular updates on the construction activities associated with SNWA's Third Intake project and the Clean Water Coalition's System Conveyance and Operations Program (SCOP - pipeline and tunnel project that will convey effluent from CWC member agencies' wastewater treatment plants to a new discharge location in Lake Mead) will be provided to the public on a regular basis.

Construction!

While the entire River Mountains Loop Trail will not be complete for several years (2010), individual segments will be dedicated each year. We hope that in traveling the Trail you will have a safe and enjoyable trip which respects the beauty and sensitivity of the desert environment.   Use the links on the left side of this page to find the sections of the trail that are now open.

The Trail

The River Mountains Loop Trail, approximately 35 miles in length, will surround the River Mountains connecting Lake Mead National Recreation Area, Hoover Dam, Henderson, Boulder City and the rest of the Las Vegas Valley, expanding recreational and alternative transportation opportunities for the region’s growing population.

In many sections of the trail,  the trail will be 24 feet wide with a twelve foot paved trail for hikers and bikers and a second trail for horses with a third trail for mountain bikers.
