Trail Closures on
the River Mountains Loop Trails
A geotechnical investigation
involving geotechnical borings will be occurring along the Equestrian Levee
between Paradise Hills and Equestrian Road from November 23 through
December 4. This portion of levee is also the River Mountains Loop
Trail. The work is being preformed per FEMA requirements to verify the
integrity of the levee.
The contractor will be
working to provide as much trail access as possible but areas of the trail may
be closed and trail users may need to traverse down or up the adjacent slopes
to go around closed sections of trail. The closures are needed to minimize
the potential for injury to trail users and encroachment into the work area.

Why is the River Mountains Loop Trail involved with National Trails
Day Celebration?
The RMT Partnership Advisory Council is nearing the end of a fifteen year
process to put the River Mountains Loop Trail on the ground. We will finish
up the last few pieces of the trail bed over
the next 18 months to 24 months. (We will have a lot of work to do after
the trail is down, like information kiosk, signage, secondary trails to the RML
trail, etc.) However this is time to celebrate our work.
The RMT PAC will be using this years National Trails Day Celebration to announce
the completion date in 2010 of the RML Trail. We have planned events to be
held at Railroad Pass Casino, Boulder City and Henderson. More of these
activities and events will be announced on
during the National Trails Day Celebration.
Come celebrate the trail!

The RMLT section five pedestrian bridge has been installed!! This
segment of the trail should be opening in 45 days. Picture by Jim
Holland. Click on picture to enlarge.

May 27, 2009
The RMLT pedestrian bridge has been scheduled to be installed
tonight Wednesday (May 27, 2009). The bridge will be located on Cascata
Drive near US 95. The bridge work will begin when the golf course has
closed for the day. This bridge when finished will parallel the nearby
railroad tracks (and some say the RMLT bridge is a bigger bridge than the
railroad bridge??). The bridge span is 163 feet.
Earlier mentions of the bridge span where incorrect at 100 feet and 150 feet.
This section of the trail is expected to take another 45 days (late
July early August) to complete with additional rock walls, berms and trail
work yet to be completed. When finished, you will be able to walk or
bike from the Railroad Pass Hotel and Casino to the Nevada State Veterans
Home.
Last night the Boulder City Council awarded a contract for the
construction of the piece of trial from the Nevada State Veterans Home to the
existing River Mountains Loop Trail located in the bottom of the Hemenway
Valley Wash Multi-Use Concrete Flood Control Channel.

An interesting article has been added to the trail blog. Click on the

"Between trail mile marker 4.5 and 5.0 you
will see new
High Concentration Photovoltaic (HCPV)
towers within Southern Nevada Water Authority's' (SNWA)
River Mountains Water Treatment Facility.
These units will generate approximately .208 Mega-Watts to help meet SNWA
power needs. SNWA is committed to generate 20% percent of its energy needs
through renewable resources by 2015, which parallels NV Energy's Renewable
Energy Portfolio Standards."

Segment Five Good News - Bad News.
Good News. The pedestrian bridge foundation has begun at Cascata
Drive near US 95. This bridge when finished will parallel the railroad
tracks (and bridge shown in the background) and provide a bridge for walkers and riders.
The bridge span will be
over 100 feet and will become the largest bridge on the RML Trail. Click
the picture for a larger image.

Bad News. The contractor working on segment five has asked for
an additional ninety days to complete this part of the trail. We
had hoped that segment 5 would be opened by June 2009. We now hope this segment will open by August 2009.
Pieces of segment five have been finished, but they are "a trail to
nowhere." See below. Click the picture for a larger image.

"Staking" has begun between Railroad Pass Casino and
the Veterans Home near Boulder City on segment "5." In the
picture below the stakes you can see show the River Mountains Loop
Trail connection to one of the Bootleg Canyon Trailheads.
The trail contract is for a 270 day build-out for this segment.
If the contractor meets their deadline we can expect this segment to
be finished and opened sometime in May 2009. Part of the
construction includes what will be the largest bridge on the River
Mountains Loop Trail. The bridge will be 100+ feet and span
the road into the Cascata Golf Course.

August 18, 2008
SEGMENT OF RIVER MOUNTAINS LOOP TRAIL TO CLOSE FOR ONE MONTH
Boulder City, Nev. - From Aug. 18 through Sep. 18, 2008, a
small segment of the River Mountains Loop Trail (RMLT) will close
for improvements to accommodate construction activities associated
with the Southern Nevada Water Authority's (SNWA) third intake
project. The trail segment to be closed is the section about
one-half mile. It is the section from the former site of Lake Mead
Cruises (just north of Boulder Harbor on Lakeshore Road), up to the
Nevada Department of Wildlife Fish Hatchery.
Improvements will include realignment of the trail to
incorporate a culvert, routing RMLT traffic below Saddle Cove Road.
The culvert will be put in place to protect RMLT users from
construction traffic related to the SNWA Third Intake project. The
small section of the trail will remain closed for about four weeks.
The rest of the RMLT will not be affected by this work.
Background on the Intake No. 3: The Southern
Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) presently operates two water
intakes at Saddle Island on the west shore of Lake Mead,
approximately five miles northwest of Hoover Dam and approximately
20 miles east of the center of Las Vegas, within the Lake Mead
National Recreation Area. Severe drought has caused declining water
levels in Lake Mead during recent years. Long-term water
supply modeling conducted by the Bureau of Reclamation
indicates that the lake level may decline even further until the
system recovers from the recent severe drought. The SNWA is
constructing a third deep-water intake, Intake No. 3, in Lake Mead,
and other associated project components to protect the existing
water system capacity.
