TRAIL DEVELOPMENT OVERVIEW

SUMMARY-. In 1998 the City of Henderson via a joint application with the County received a Nevada .Recreational Trails grant for this segment. This trail segment will develop in phases. The trail will be developed initially as a graded dirt trail. The trail will follow an existing dirt road from the Henderson R10 water tank to Lake Mead Drive, following along Lake Mead Drive to a culvert under crossing. Some grading is needed to clearly establish the trail along Lake Mead Drive. The city of Henderson has awarded a contract for design of this segment.

RIVER MOUNTAINS LOOP - NATIONAL TRAILS DAY CELEBRATION

Gale force winds could not keep trails enthusiasts away from celebrating the completion of another paved segment of the River Mountains Loop Trail on National Trails Day, Saturday morning, June 2, 2001.

Segment 13 of the River Mountains Trail was opened to trail users by staff and supporters from the Lake Mead National Recreation Area, City of Henderson, the Clark County Trails Program, Southern Nevada Water Authority, Outside Las Vegas, and the Southern Nevada Regional Trails Partnership.

As Lake Mead staff gave an overview of construction and progress in trail development, trail enthusiasts were treated to a variety of landscapes including the rugged River Mountains to the east, sparkling Lake Las Vegas and the stark red mountains of the Sunrise Management area to the west.

Currently there are 12 miles of the loop on the ground and all 35 miles of the trail are now funded.  Additionally, several miles will be added to the trail when Tunnel 5, which leads the way from Hoover Dam to the Alan Bible Visitor Center at Lake Mead, is opened this fall, per Jim Holland of the Lake Mead National Recreation Area.

For those attending including John Holman, chairman of the River Mountains Trail Partnership, Alan O'Neill of Outside Las Vegas, Bill Rowe from the City of Henderson, and our own Kristine Roberts, Trails Coordinator, it was a celebration of both hard work and fun completed over the last year.

Clark County contributed to the funding of the completion of Segment 13 as one of our Six Pilot Trails Project approved by the Board of County Commissioners in June 1998.
