Segment 22 the last and final segment pending a funding source. It will be included in the next round of the SNPLMA project nominations for Lake Mead NRA  It is the goal of the River Mountains Trail Partnership to have a competed trail system including signage and trail heads by the fall of 2004.

SEGMENT ENDPOINTS:

START: Lawler Junction Trailhead

FINISH: Lake Mead National Recreation Area boundary at Pacifica Street Historic Railroad Trailhead

SEGMENT NARRATIVE.

From the Lawler Switchyard Trailhead the trail pass under Lakeshore Road via a pedestrian tunnel and follows the Historic Railroad Trail uphill. The trail crosses Hemenway Wash and makes a long sweeping turn up through the River Mountains foothills before entering Boulder City at the Pacifica Street/Historic Railroad trailhead. The width for this segment of the trail is narrower than the preferred 25-foot corridor.

EXISTING TRAIL CONDITIONS:

TRAIL WIDTH: 20 feet

TRAIL TREAD/surface: Dirt/Gravel

OTHER Features: This trail segment has drainage improvements on the trail corridor through Hemenway Wash. The Loop Trail connects to Historic Railroad Trail access to Hoover Dam, which currently ends at Tunnel #5. In 1996 the National Park Service, Boulder City, and the Bureau of Reclamation applied and received an ISTEA grant for the extension of the Historic Railroad Trail from Tunnel #5 to Hoover Dam, where it will connect with the parking garage. Due to topography and the historic setting additional analysis is needed.

LAND OWNERSHIP AND OTHERS WITH EASEMENTS OR OTHER LEGAL ACCESS:

National Park Service on Bureau of Reclamation lands withdrawn for water and power purposes.

PROPOSED OR PENDING LAND USE CHANGES OR OTHER OPPORTUNITIES OR OBSTACLES:

The trail corridor crosses numerous channels through Hemenway Wash and will be a challenge to maintain. There are also challenges of connecting to Boulder Beach, a popular destination in this segment.

TRAIL DEVELOPMENT OVERVIEW

SUMMARY. This trail was recently rebuilt following flood damage. ISTEA funding received in 1997 is available to upgrade facilities along this existing trail. This funding was awarded to the NPS in partnership with Boulder City and the Bureau of Reclamation. Additional funding will be necessary to address drainage issues in Hemenway Valley and to place a hardened surface on the trail. A thorough analysis of drainage needs should be made and enhancement programmed. Trail facilities funded through an ISTEA grant for the Hoover Dam connection include shade structures and interpretive exhibits. The facilities will be built with funds uncommitted post opening of Tunnel #5. Equestrian access needs to be evaluated. 

 

This is the west end of segment 22 or
east end of segment 1. 
Boulder City has provided a dirt parking lot near the sewage lift station.

The trail east along segment 22
is an easy walking
dirt road looking trail. 

At the east end of segment 22 you go under Lake Shore Drive to connect to the Historic Railroad Trail or to segment 21 (not ready for hiking).
